Large Soapstone Carving of a Sow and 8 Piglets Qing
A rare and large carving from a single boulder of a sow being suckled by her 8 piglets, the stone of a reddish tone with areas of light gray-brown and highlights of gold, the piglets in various positions around her underbelly and head. Qing. 14 in. long x 9 in high. 21 lbs with carved wooden stand.

Condition: Perfect. No chips, cracks, breaks or other damages. Slight surface scratches consistent with age.

Provenance: Acquired from a Palm Beach, Florida estate in 2003.

Carvings of soapstone sows with their piglets made during the late Qing are normally much smaller in size. We are not aware of another sow and piglets soapstone carving of this size that has been published.
