Of cylindrical form, covered in a rich patina, the exterior deeply reticulated and well carved the entire length with the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and their attendants, one playing the qin while the others look on and engage in different pursuits, all in a forest of pine and bamboo, fitted with a hardwood top and base. Minor age cracks. 18th C. 7 1.2 in.
Provenance: E&J Frankel Chinese Art, New York The carvings on bamboo parfumiers can be as superior as any done on carved bamboo figures and brushpots of the 17th/18th C. The skill required is tested by the limited diameter of the bamboo stalk being carved.
