Standing Jizo Bosatsu sculpted in relief from a blue-green schist. Momoyama/early-Edo Period ca. 1600. Minor old loss. Height: 43.0 cm The tapered base of this stone was originally inserted into the soil up to the feet of the Jizo figure, as indicated by the brownish discoloration. For vertical display indoors, some form of lateral support is required. Blue-green schist, from which this Jizo is sculpted, was quarried primarily in the Kanto region comprising Tokyo and surrounding prefectures up until the first decade or so of the Edo Period (1603–1868). |
