Stone Dai-Nichi Nyorai Buddha Vairocana Edo 17 c.

Dai-Nichi Buddha seated upon a lotus-form dais, the hands forming the chi-ken-in "knowledge fist" mudra, sculpted in relief from tuff, a sedimentary stone composed largely of volcanic ash. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650. Old loss to bottom surface. Variegated lichen accumulation.

Height: 56 cm
Width: 45 cm
Depth: 26 cm

A sizable, elegantly sculpted Diamond-World Dai-Nichi Buddha, stone depictions of which are uncommon. Old loss of approximately 5 cm to the stone's bottom surface argues for outdoor garden display, in which case the loss can be effectively camouflaged. A notably good piece.
