Stone Hokora Hut Shinto Buddhist Edo 18 c.

Stone hokora, a protective structure originally employed to symbolically enshrine the guardian deity of a given clan or locality. Mid-Edo Period ca. 1750. Minor old loss, with good lichen accumulation on the roof.

Height: 38 cm
Roof width: 28 cm
Roof depth: 32 cm.

This hokora's original function as a divine dwelling notwithstanding, a more rational world-view might see in it a potential bird house, for example. In any case, an intriguing, well-preserved piece of the distant past.
