Japanese Stone Sculpture Jizo Bosatsu Late-Edo 18/19 c.

Jizo Bosatsu seated upon a lotus-form dais, the centrally placed hands holding a hoju (sacred jewel), figuratively sculpted from a grayish sedimentary stone composed largely of volcanic ash. Late-Edo Period ca. 1800. Minor old loss. Light lichen accumulation. Faint traces of polychrome.

Height: 31.5 cm
Width: 20 cm
Depth: 14.5 cm

A slightly wistful Jizo sculpted with elegant simplicity. Outstanding.
