Antique Stones Japan
Daikyocho 27
Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0015

Stone Daikokuten Shichifukujin Lucky God Edo 19 c.
Daikokuten sculpted from a high-quality sandstone. Late-Edo Period ca. 1850. Very minor old loss.

Height: 13.8 cm
Width: 10.0 cm
Depth: 7.5 cm

Stone depictions of Daikokuten, one of Japan's seven lucky gods (shichifukujin), are uncommon. This finely sculpted example was kept indoors in a zushi and is therefore in nearly flawless condition. What appear to be abrasions or repairs on the upper edges of the two bales, just in front of the feet, are in fact natural intrusions of a grayish-white calcified substance.
