Stone Sho-Kannon Bosatsu Japanese Sculpture Edo 18/19 c

Standing Sho-Kannon Bosatsu atop a lotus-form dais figuratively sculpted from a heavy volcanic stone, the left hand holding a short-stemmed lotus bud and the right hand forming the semui-in mudra of fearlessness, and a small standing Amida Buddha adorning the towering headdress. Mid-Edo Period ca. 1775. Minor old loss. Light lichen accumulation.

Height: 52 cm
Diameter of lotus-form dais: 23 cm.

An elegantly sculpted, sweetly expressive Sho-Kannon stone. Uncommon.
