Standing Amida Nyorai, the hands forming the raigo-in mudra welcoming the souls of the departed faithful to the Western Paradise. Sculpted from Japanese cypress with yosegi-zukuri joined-block construction, the eyes of inset crystal and the entirety finished in lacquer and gold leaf. The lotus-form dais and mandorla form an original ensemble with the Buddha figure. Muromachi Period ca. 1500. Very minor old loss, and the hands masterfully rendered replacements.
Height, including lotus-form dais and mandorla: 76.8 cm
Height of Buddha figure only: 65.5 cm.
An exquisitely sculpted, impressively scaled Amida Buddha with exceptional presence and in excellent condition, showing structural and stylistic features clearly indicative of a Muromachi-Period manufacture.
