Shaka, the historical Buddha, seated upon a lotus-form dais with hands placed centrally on the lap in the jo-in mudra of concentration, sculpted from Japanese cypress (Jp. hinoki) with joined-block construction (Jp. yosegi-zukuri) and finished in lacquer and gold leaf, with eyes of inset crystal. Early- to mid-Edo Period ca. 1675. With the exception of old loss to the Buddha's right earlobe and loss of the mandorla originally placed behind the Buddha, excellent original condition with no apparent signs of repair or restoration, and desirably patinated overall.

Overall height, including lotus-form dais: 57.5 cm
Height of Buddha figure only: 37 cm
Width: 31 cm
Depth: 29 cm
Upper-surface diameter of lotus-form dais: 32 cm

A redoubtable piece in all respects.
