Stone Jizo Bosatsu bodhisattva Buddha Edo 18th c.

Stone depiction of a standing Jizo Bosatsu, the right hand holding a shakujo (crozier) and the left the sacred jewel, clearly dated to the third year of the Hoei Era (1706), mid-Edo Period. Loss to the figure and to the perimeter of the overarching mandorla. Light lichen accumulation.

Height: 61.7 cm
Width: 30.2 cm
Depth: 20.6 cm.

Sculpted in bold relief from a hard sedimentary stone, this large Jizo piece is a classic example of professionally sculpted early mid-Edo Japanese stone.
