Stone depiction of a standing Sho-Kannon Bosatsu, the left hand holding a long-stemmed lotus blossom and the right hand forming the semui-in mudra of fearlessness. Clearly dated to the seventh year of the Hoei Era (1710), mid-Edo Period. Minor loss to the upper portion of the overarching mandorla. Excellent lichen accumulation. Height: 64.8 cm Sho-Kannon Bosatsu is the essential manifestation of Kannon Bosatsu. The important bodhisattva's additional 32 manifestations, among which are Nyoirin Kannon, 11-men (11-Headed) Kannon, Senju (Thousand-Armed) Kannon, and Bato (Horse-Headed) Kannon, are variations on the Sho-Kannon theme. This example in sandstone, showing the Kannon hallmarks of lotus bud and mudra of fearlessness, possesses good size, glorious lichen accumulation, and irrefutable temporal provenance. It is, in addition, in excellent condition, with the single exception of minor loss to the upper portion. An exceptional stone. |
