Stone lantern hand-sculpted in six pieces from Izumo-ishi, Edo Period ca. 1700. Surface flaking and softening of the lines and contours overall, but structurally sound. Overall height 159 cm, Diameter of foundation stone 42 cm. Izumo is the old name for the region within modern-day Shimane Prefecture famous for a type of sedimentary stone composed of volcanic ash, eponymously named Izumo-ishi. Izumo-ishi is particularly famous for its use in the production of stone lanterns. Japanese stone lanterns in this style and with this amount of age are no longer readily available in the local market. Exceedingly uncommon. |
