A standing Jizo Bosatsu sculpted in relief from a particularly hard, heavy stone of volcanic origin, the left hand bearing aloft a hoju (sacred jewel) and the right grasping a shakujo (crozier). Late-Muromachi Period/early-Edo Period ca. 1550–1600. Notably good condition, with inevitable softening of the lines and contours and minor surface erosion. Height: 45.1 cm A brilliant Jizo stone, with stylistic signs pointing clearly to a pre-Edo manufacture date. Extremely uncommon. (For a discussion of stylistic characteristics of pre-Edo stone sculpture, please see our stock #15 and stock #54.) |
