Stone Ebisu 7 Lucky Gods Shichifukujin Daikokuten Edo
Seated Ebisu in stone with remnants of polychrome. Late-Edo Period ca. 1825. Loss of fishing rod, originally held in figure's right hand; otherwise, excellent condition.

Height: 23.5 cm
Width: 18.6 cm
Depth 11.9 cm.

Of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods (shichifukujin), only Ebisu has roots in the native soil; the other six have Indian or Chinese origins. This notably good example is sculpted from a lightweight stone of volcanic extraction. Stone depictions of Ebisu are exceedingly uncommon.
