Stone lantern hand-sculpted in six pieces from a heavy volcanic stone. Momoyama Period/early-Edo Period ca. 1600. Minor loss. Height: 80 cm The kiku (chrysanthemum) flower and kiri (paulownia) leaf motif sculpted in bold relief on the roof element of this lantern symbolizes the Japanese Imperial family, while the hyotan (gourd) motif on the pillar is highly auspicious. Ruling-class connotations, good fortune, and very wabi-sabi. An arrestingly charming little lantern, sourced from a private dealer in Kyoto. |
