Stone Gorinto 5-Tiered Stupa Pagoda Jizo Buddha 14/15 c
Gorinto (lit. 5-tiered stupa) sculpted from a single stone. Nanbokucho/Muromachi Period ca. 1350–1450, possibly earlier. Very minor old loss.

Height: 36.3 cm
Base: 11.8 cm square.

The gorinto is a distinctively Japanese style of stupa comprising five geometric forms. E. Dale Saunders, in his 1959 classic, Mudra, notes that the Japanese Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism views the gorinto as a symbol of Dai-Nichi Buddha, who, underlying all things, manifests himself in the five elements making up the physical world.

A notably handsome example of type sculpted from a relatively heavy, hard igneous stone and showing sharp delineation among the five elements, with a pleasing formal balance overall.
