Granite depiction of a seated Jizo Bosatsu. Early-Edo Period ca. 1625. Significant softening of the lines and contours overall. Good lichen accumulation. Height: 29.0 cm A discreetly charming little Jizo sculpted in relief from a high-ferric-content granite, the surface erosion level suggesting a pre-Edo manufacture date but the relatively flat bottom surface and the fact that it's a depiction of Jizo as opposed to Amida both more certainly indicating Edo. |
