Stone depiction of one of Kannon Bosatsu's 33 forms. Late-Edo Period ca. 1850. Minor old loss. Light lichen accumulation. Height: 39.7 cm The bonji (Sanskrit character) incised on the front surface above the figure's head symbolizes Kannon Bosatsu. According to the Lotus Sutra, Kannon has 33 different forms. Obscure and iconographically variable, these 33 forms are rarely depicted in any medium but stone. This sharply executed piece originally formed part of a complete set of 33 Kannon stones. Uncommon. |
