An unusual late Victorian sterling silver three piece personal or portable Communion set, fully hallmarked for Sheffield, England 1889-1890. This three piece set consists of the 4-3/8" tall ewer, the 3-1/8" paten (or host tray) and the 3-1/2" chalice (or wine goblet). These sets are for a priest to deliver Holy Communion when away from church - in a home or hospital, for example, but this is a smaller scale version, much less common, known also as a personal Communion set. Each has the maker's mark of Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall, who are better known as Martin Hall & Co. Ltd. (Sheffield 1866-1936). This set weighs 148.7 grams, the chalice and ewer both have internal gilding, and each piece has fine incised decoration with engraving on the paten. This set is in excellent condition with no dents, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than some bending to the base of the ewer (easily straightened) and the stem of the chalice is a bit off center. There is a scratched identification legend on the base of the paten and a shallow bend in the chalice's rim as well. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. A superb c1920 German clear glass 0.4 litre pewter lidded beer stein with a finely hand painted and gilded porcelain dedication insert. This stein stands 6-1/2" tall to the top of the unusual drinker figural thumbpiece, and the glass has a thumbprint design. The pewter lid has a decorated edge with notches to the rear and the glass has a cross topped crown mark on the bottom. The insert is beautifully hand painted with student fraternal crest with the legends "GOTHIA SEI'S PANIER!" and "EHRE, FREIHEIT, VATERLAND." (Honor, Freedom, Fatherland). This was one of the most popular German fraternal mottoes, and there is still a Gothia (Hall) fraternity. We received an informative email from a German student to complete our information (Our thanks to Mr. Schnell for his help): the motto and crest is for Burschenschaft Gothia Hannover, whose name has changed in recent times to Burschenschaft Teutonia Hannover. German student fraternities became popular in the early 19th century in Germany, but they were abolished by Hess under the Nazi regime in 1935-36. Some have re-established fraternities, but not all. The interior of the porcelain plaque states "RICHARD REINECKE S./L. LBF. KARL ELSNER Z. FRDL. ERG. W.S. 1920/21." The names of both men has their fraternal circle (or zirkel, German) fraternal mark after their name. The rim of the pewter lid has small straight notches cut into the rim on either side of the thumb-rest (also called tang), which apparently represents the number of duels the student fought. Academic duelling, or Mensur, as it was known in Germany, was practiced regularly at student fraternities, where scars received duelling were considered badges of honour. It is most likely a personal gift, from a fraternity student to a another student ("z. frdl. erg." translates as "on kindly remembrance"). The colours predominant in the heraldic crest (which usually refer to the fraternity itself) are dark green, red and gold, and the one segment of the crest I could not find elsewhere is located in the upper left, it appears to be the Burschenschaftsdenkmal, which translates approximately to the fraternity memorial, which was a memorial built in 1901-2. The bottom of the stein has a crown mark molded into the base, which is looks like the Walther and Sohne mark, and they did produce steins in this period. This item is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs, other than some looseness of the pewter handle where it mounts to the glass handle and a slight touch of gold wear on one feather on the crest. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Expedited tracked and insured parcel shipping to the U.S. starts at $25 (other spots may vary, air is higher). Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. A pair of stunning hand painted and gilt metal mounted 19th century Sevres style plant pots or jardinieres. This pair consists of two French porcelain 9-1/2" diameter and 7-3/4" tall planters with white glazed interiors and painted scenes on the exterior. The scenes include floral panels and 18th century couples on a deep turquoise blue ground with hand gilding. Each pot is mounted on a footed gilt brass stand, which has two side straps with lion heads with mouth tassels. Each strap is mounted to a top beaded collar anchoring the pot to the fittings. They have a blue painted Sevres style mark and the uprights are stamped AH on the interior. Condition is reasonable considering their age, with the following issues: there is minor gilding loss, one metal arm/upright has been broken in three pieces and it has been crudely soldered and re-broken, some of the screws are replacements and one segment of one support column has been refastened on a different part of the upper collar on one pot. One pot and fittings is intact, the other needs some professional brazing and refitting of the fractured column. The pots themselves are in excellent condition with no crazing, chips, cracks or repairs other than some minor wear to the gilding and some dulling of the interior bottom glaze from use in the past. We've seen the supports offered online on occasion (rescued from broken examples) so it may be possible to replace the damaged one. This handsome matching pair is in as-described condition as stated above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Expedited tracked insured parcel shipping to the U.S. starts at $78 (other spots may vary, air is higher). Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: we DO NOT accept PayPal, only VISA and MASTERCARD.
