A gentleman's 18k yellow gold signet carnelian intaglio seal ring circa 1900. The carnelian gem is carved intaglio with a Latin motto " Sequere Me Est Voluntas Dai " (this possibly was a mis-spelling of Dei rather than Dai, Dei meaning God). In the centre of the motto, which is in the typical garter belt surrounding the outer edge of the stone, there is a bird perched upon a cross holding a branch in its beak, possibly an olive branch. My Latin is practically non-existent, but it appears to translate to Follow Me It Is The Will Of God (Latin scholars feel free to let me know if this a is a less than ideal translation...). This antique size 7-1/2 or 7.5 ring measures 1/2" x 3/8" across the stone, and it weighs 6.0 grams. It is stamped with somewhat worn hallmarks, including the English crown mark and 18 (year and year date not visible) for 18k. The maker's mark may be a variant of Stewart Dawson and Co, of London and Liverpool (later Stewart Dawson LD, est. 1881). These rings were originally used in wax seals to close documents before the use of stickable envelopes. It has the patination as expected but is otherwise in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs. Great gift for that man with the Edwardian gentleman style. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; the items we sell are invariably vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Silver and silver plated items are hand polished, not buffed. Expedited insured tracked post to the U.S. starts at $27, and shipping within Canada starts at $18. Rates vary by destination, value, size, weight, payment option and shipping method. Other payment, tracking and insurance options are available - please inquire. A pair of stunning hand painted and gilt metal mounted 19th century Sevres style plant pots or jardinieres. This pair consists of two French porcelain 9-1/2" diameter and 7-3/4" tall planters with white glazed interiors and painted scenes on the exterior. The scenes include floral panels and 18th century couples on a deep turquoise blue ground with hand gilding. Each pot is mounted on a footed gilt brass stand, which has two side straps with lion heads with mouth tassels. Each strap is mounted to a top beaded collar anchoring the pot to the fittings. They have a blue painted Sevres style mark and the uprights are stamped AH on the interior. Condition is reasonable considering their age, with the following issues: there is minor gilding loss, one metal arm/upright has been broken in three pieces and it has been crudely soldered and re-broken, some of the screws are replacements and one segment of one support column has been refastened on a different part of the upper collar on one pot. One pot and fittings is intact, the other needs some professional brazing and refitting of the fractured column. The pots themselves are in excellent condition with no crazing, chips, cracks or repairs other than some minor wear to the gilding and some dulling of the interior bottom glaze from use in the past. We've seen the supports offered online on occasion (rescued from broken examples) so it may be possible to replace the damaged one. This handsome matching pair is in as-described condition as stated above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Expedited tracked insured parcel shipping to the U.S. starts at $78 (other spots may vary, air is higher). Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only.
