This c.1900 vintage claret decanter has a heavy sterling handle and hinged top with a ball thumb rest mounted on a tall ribbed cut crystal decanter. It measures 13-7/8" tall and 5-1/2" across the cut crystal base. It is stamped Gebr. Friedland, a Berlin jewellery firm, operated by the sons after the death of the founder Friedland in 1829. It has the German silver marks (post-1888 crescent & crown stamp), 800 silver, 49961 and a maker's stamp for Koch & Bergfeld of Bremen (est. 1829). There is a very finely engraved heraldic family crest with a fish, knight's helmet with three feathers and engraved scrolling. A superb, ornate Victorian period 8-1/8" long sterling and mother-of-pearl parasol handle c1875-90. This Victorian fashion accessory consists of a 2" wide fancy oval shape repousse sterling handle, a finely formed paneled middle section of lustrous genuine mother-of-pearl and a sterling silver repousse end. You can see a hole at the end - this was where the wood parasol stem was inserted. Marked simply STERLING (on both top and bottom sections), this handle has a fancy McD monogram. Although its original use was for a parasol, it could also be re-cycled as a handle for a walking stick, and it is in remarkably fine condition for its age and use, with no chips, cracks, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs.
