Moroccan ~ BERBER ~ Headdress
$ 150

This is a Moroccan BERBER Headdress from the 1980's or earlier. It measures about 7 1/2" X 7 1/2" X 10 1/2" ( 19.1 cm X 19.1 cm X 26.8 cm ). It weighs about 1 Lb ( 0.5 kg ). The Berbers are the ethnic group from North Africa, West of the Nile Valley. Morocco has the majority of Berbers: 10.4 million (representing 40% of the total). The Berbers call themselves Imazighen, meaning The Free. Berbers are non-Arabic tribes, often referred to as Arab-Islamic. Many Berbers have converted to Islam during the last few centuries. 2/3 of the Berbers live in rural and mountaineous areas, contrary to the idea that they are nomadic people who cross the desert on camels. However, Berber merchants did transport goods by camel caravans. Berbers raised goats, sheep, and cattle. Women were generally in charge of cooking and keeping the house and children... and engaged in weaving and pottery. Necklaces, headdresses, bracelets, were made of silver, coral, amber, and beads. Different colors and designs had their own spiritual meaning. Some necklaces had pouches to carry things.
