This is a large and dramatic 23 by 29 inch oil on canvas military painting by Ernest Crofts 1847-1911 signed and dated 1867. He is well listed and known for his military paintings.He did a lot of scenes of Waterloo. I am not sure if this is from there or not. This is a interesting and unusual oil painting of a WW1 burial procession.There is a bombed out town in the back round and a rifle on the ground which would seem to indicate a recent battle.It is signed on the left Richard Assmann ??? Zeichme?...

I could find no listings of his works in this large of a size.

Hoppin in the lower right corner. The artist is listed in who's who and Davenports.In 1991 Skinners sold one of his paintings for $4600.00

This is a nice large 18 by 24 sight size oil on canvas by Paul Flegel a listed artist.It seems to be in its original frame which is 26 by 32.The painting is in great original condition. The carved wood 60's frame has a few chips in the thin gesso top coat.Flegel was known for his style of painting on the open canvas with a palette knife which is quite evident in this picture.From the few pictures of his we could find on line this seems to be a much better than normal example of his work...
