Lion With A Boar Christophe Fratin Cast iron 1849

This is a interesting cast iron sculpture by the well known Animalier sculpture Christophe Fratin 1801-1864. He was one of the first French artists to do sculptures of animal subjects. He was banned from the Paris Salon from 1843 to 1850 because his animal sculpture was considered to radical. This piece titled Lion en Trainant un Sanglier (Lion Dragging a Boar) was created in 1849. I believe from the style of the base and the wood insert that this was a life time cast.I could only find a couple of examples of this figure that have sold in the last 20 years. They were the same size but cast in bronze. One of them sold 2 years ago in France for over $7000.00. The only other cast iron listing by Fratin I could find was for a pair of large statues in Central Park New York.Cast Iron is harder to work with than Bronze so it was not used much and was mostly used prior to the 1860's.This sculpture is 18 3/4 long and 10 inches high.It is cast in 3 parts. It is not signed but is for sure Fratin's work.
