A shallow, thick-walled bowl typically used along with a pestle to mash certain parts of seal or whale meat and blubber together. Red pigment has been washed over the various design levels on the interior of the vessel. Showing an extremely greasy, aged patina. Probably southern Alaskan Eskimo. Quite an attractive example with an unforgettable aroma. 9"Diam x 2.5"H. In very fine condition. Possibly late 19th century. Provenance: Old New England private collection.
