Though the exact function of this large and majestic tripod bowl is not known, such vessels have been associated with the trophy-head cult and high-status burials. From the Central Highlands/Atlantic Watershed region of Costa Rica. Period VI (CE 1000-1550). Intact, very fine original condition, with stabilized stress cracks; two of three supports have the original, ceramic rattle balls. 11.25"W x 6 5/8"H. Provenance: Old private collection, NYC, since the 1970's.

This pyriform vessel is a monumental example from the late period Pataky polychrome ceramic tradition (CE 1200-1550), created in what is, today, the Guanacaste-Nicoya Zone of Costa Rica.
