This type of figure, known as a 'kabeja,' is thought to ward off malicious, threatening spirits. It shows back-to-back, male and female, figures with wonderfully thin and delicate features. There is a small receptacle atop the head, still plugged with fetish material. It is quite similar in concept to a previous Hemba entry in my catalog, item # 1250067, but differs in that it is much more finely carved and proportioned. The varied surface is a medium to dark brown patina, overall, and i ...click for details

This type of small mask or puppet head, with a movable lower jaw, seems to have developed among the Ogoni people about the turn of the 19th/20th century. Gradually, the form has lost some of its sinister appearance and association with the dead. But, even today when such grotesque masks are worn masquerades have a risky quality. Their authoritarian nature lends them an immunity which permits the dancers to confront anyone. This fine, old example is an enigmatic one showing an unusual combinatio ...click for details

Finely carved with a thin and delicate spoon bowl and a standing, nude, muscular, male effigy handle. This ritual hardwood example is notable for its lustrous, wonderful color, the result of much handling and use. This type of grayware pottery was made by Caddo Indian women for special use in life and often accompanied deceased loved ones into burial tombs within earthen mounds. It is hand-made without the use of a wheel and was appliqued and incised using simple means - like fingernails, then all was further embellished with white pigment which is still somewhat visible. It dates to the Mid-Mississippian period, CE 1000-1300, and was found in Clark County, Arkansas. 7 5/8"H x 6"Diam, in very fi ...click for details

A sturdy vessel with an ornately painted interior surface showing a so-called 'Muan' bird (owl) of the Maya underworld. However, the central bird forms depicted on these plates are more likely to represent a Turkey Vulture, a creature equated with Maya lordship/rulership. The profile of an anthropomorphic old god also can be seen as part of its head here - the bird's upper beak representing the elongated chin or jaw of the old deity. Iguana-like creatures are found on the beveled wal ...click for details

The isolated existence of the various ethnic groups living in the Himalayas has created a diversity in beliefs. The masks themselves illustrate the beliefs of Hindu and Buddhist religions and the enigmatic, archaic traditions found in the cults of the shaman. This particular mask falls into the last category, a 'tribal' example, worn by the shaman himself, showing deformed or exaggerated features meant to surprise or convey a disturbing aspect of the ceremony. Like ritualists everywhere ...click for details

Representing the sun in its nighttime guise, this large and graphic head fragment shows a jaguar with bared fangs and teeth, prominent rounded ears, and squared-circle, deity eyes. It is a classic, hollow fragment from a monumental, lidded burial urn of the type found in the Guatemalan highlands of Quiche Department. Dating to the Late Classic period, CE 600-900, the effigy head has extensive remains of post-fire red, yellow and black pigment, and is in very fine, solid condition. The handle of this important, regal flywhisk shows a lively, young, kneeling female with emphasized breasts and feet, in the manner of a supplicant devotee of the Shango cult or of a woman who is a messenger of the spirits. The hardwood handle has acquired a superb, glossy, honey-brown patina from much use; the long leather strips are elegant and well-preserved, and are attached to the wooden handle by means of braided strapping to add strength and effectiveness to the functionality of the whi ...click for details

The sensuous, fluid forms of this figure have been ritually cleaned and rubbed with special oils; the facial plane, especially, appears moist on the surface from numerous, annual applications. The resulting deep and glossy, reddish-black surface of this beautifully composed standing, young female compliments its distinctly slender physique. Possibly a 'jo nyeleni' figure or one owned by the 'jo' society'. It is 19.5"H, and in very fine condition with minimal losses, main ...click for details
