The elegant, hardwood example with ridged spade form paddle section. The shaft is finely incised with simple designs and the end handle has the typical, delicate and thin, U-shaped form found on these monoxylous objects. Showing a fine, varied and shiny, medium brown, aged patina. Collected in the 1970's by a Belgian couple. Custom steel mount. Rare item. 65.25"L x 6"W, maximum.

Showing two highly similar busts of mythical origin, with a fine deep, reddish brown, shiny patina from much handling. This early 20th century hard wood carving was collected in the 1950's by Arthur Oriel. It measures 31.75" L and is in fine condition except for a very slight, old loss to the tip of the nose of the top head.

This finely carved dance drum comes from Manus Island, the largest island of the Admiralty Islands chain off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. Most adult participants in ceremonies throughout Melanesia play such hand drums, but the smaller scale of this example might indicate it belonged to an adolescent or child. Rich, textured, surface patina achieved with a thick, white pigment, then painted in black; carved areas painted in red ocher. The 'coolamon' form by Mindindil(Bubbles), aka Lily Karadada (born circa 1937), in thick eucalyptus bark material showing four(4)images of the creator god 'Wandjina', with radiating halo-like head surround and similar eyes, schematic nose, and hunched shoulders. A much weathered but intact example of a larger mask form placed onto the roof line of a sacred house. The main face is that of an ancestor with prominent eyes and open mouth. The chin area is long and pointed and zoomorphic in design, recalling scaly reptilian hide and secretive eyes. A large hornbill crane or waterbird is sprawled across the forehead and ingeniously blends into the fantastic composition. Of the type used for trade, bride price, and public ceremony, with plaited rattan and yellow orchid binding, and removable greenstone blade. Though found in the Mt.Hagen area, such axes are typically made by the people of the Jimi Valley, Papua New Guinea. This example measures 24"H x 21.50"W, is in very fine condition aside from minor nicks and stains to the original stone blade, and comes from a European private collection, circa 1960's. Custom steel mount.

This wooden panel from the interior of a sacred house originates from the Middle Sepik River area. It was most likely created by Iatmul peoples, and shows great movement and dimension for such a shallow relief carving. Medium hardwood with organic, polychrome paints; very fine aged patina. Early 20th century. 65.50"L x 13.75"W. Excellent condition with old, dormant insect damage, mainly visible on the reverse; a small, more recent loss midway along the right edge.
