Published Bidjogo altar figure of 'Orebuko-Okoto'
Fine example of the 'Great Spirit', known as "Orebuko-Okoto" by the peoples living in the Bidjogo Islands off the coast of Guinea, West Africa. These rarely seen figures are carved of one piece of wood with a hollowed middle, cylindrical in form, which received sacrificial materials. A sensitively carved head with metal eyes and applied textile and hair above a long, ringed neck. Such figures are attended by a priestess and kept on a shrine altar. Early 20th C, 23"H x 7.25 Diam. In very fine, original condition with exceptional preservation and surface patina. Wood, red and black textile, metal, fiber, and various undetermined materials. PROVENANCE: WILLIAM W.
