An exceptional Gurage wooden neckrest
The much darkened surface showing a brilliant, deep, purplish-black sheen from decades of use, and the top further enhanced with bits of aluminum which form an abstracted design. From the Gurage people, southern Ethiopia, this example is from the early 20th c, and measures about 6" in length, the top just about the same in diameter. In very fine condition with original fiber cord. Provenance: Florida private collection, since the 1980's.
