A superb wooden Kuba ritual mortar
The pedestal foot vessel carved with guilloche patterns and images of pangolin (manis tricuspis). A deep, blackish brown patina covers the entire vessel, especially the interior, and the surface on the exterior is smooth and shiny from much handling. The contents of such a small container must have been quite potent and special. Early 20th century from D.R.Congo, Central Africa. 5" in height, and in mint condition. Provenance: collection of Peter Pollack, NY and Fl, since the early 1960's.
