|These fragile sculptures consist of six sections: torso, two arms, two legs, and head, and are only visible after the death and funeral of a high-ranking Bukota society member. After ritual sacrifices and requests to the ancestor have been made, these schematic figures are taken apart and stored in the rafters of the communal meeting house. From the northeastern forest region of D.R. Congo, this used example, dating to the early-mid 20th century, is painted with characteristic white spots over a darkened, more resinous material. The figure itself stands 60" H to the tips of the fragmentary fingers. It is custom mounted and still able to be dissembled. Provenance: Dutch private collection, since the 1970's.|
