A fine wooden Luvale female ancestor mask
Known as "Kashinakaji", or "old woman", this mask is stylized with a flattened face and cubist features. The character represented is that of "an accomplished, fulfilled, mature woman - a female role model for all to respect and admire" (Chokwe! Editor Manuel Jordan, ill.67). Measures 8 7/8", and is in fine condition with only a small loss to the right side edge of the coiffure area. Otherwise, it has an excellent, medium brown, aged patina. Early-mid 20th C, from Zambia, South-central Africa. Provenance: private collection, New York.
