A fine Fipa wooden female figure from Western Tanzania
"Fipa sculpture reflects the cultural crossroads Fipa inhabit," (Shangaa: Art of Tanzania, chapter 7 by Allen F. Roberts). This pregnant female with a herniated navel shows much influence from the neighboring Nyamwezi peoples of central Tanzania. Standing 8" H, the figure is finely patinated with a deep, varied, medium to dark brown, shiny surface. It was purportedly collected in Tabora, Tanzania, 1990's. In excellent condition, right foot deficient and with custom steel base. Mid 20th century. Provenance: private Florida collection.
