A fine Central African wood and metal 'mbira'
The large, hollow, lamellaphone with an ancestral face image placed on the lower section. This example originates from the D.R. Congo, Zambia, Angola border region. The 10 metal keys have metal resonator tabs added, and the sealed inside of this example contains hard, loose objects - likely stones, metal or glass sections, which rattle when the instrument is shaken or moved. A sound hole on the backside is placed to allow a finger to add a vibrato effect to the notes played. 13 5/8" H., in very fine, playable condition, with a medium brown, varied, aged patina. Early-mid 20th century. Private Florida collection.
