A superb Zairian diviner's basket with female figure
This is a rare example of private, hidden, ritual 'bilumbu' material. It is a peek into a world few ever witness, except for the diviner himself. The wooden, female figure is placed perfectly into a hardened substance set into this wicker work basket, and is surrounded by a phallic form seed pod rattle and a bevy of bones, shells, and other magical items. It is from the D.R.Congo, probably from a Lubaized group if not the Luba themselves. It comes from the Jean Pierre Hallet collection, since the 1960's. It measures 16" high and 10" wide, and is in very fine condition. Early-mid 20th century.
