A Bamana standing female figure
The sensuous, fluid forms of this figure have been ritually cleaned and rubbed with special oils; the facial plane, especially, appears moist on the surface from numerous, annual applications. The resulting deep and glossy, reddish-black surface of this beautifully composed standing, young female compliments its distinctly slender physique. Possibly a 'jo nyeleni' figure or one owned by the 'jo' society'. It is 19.5"H, and in very fine condition with minimal losses, mainly on the extremities. Late 19th C., from Mali, West Africa. Provenance: Bart family collection, since the 1950's, NYC and FL.
