Photographed in the village of Dzitnup, Yucatan State, Mexico, 1975. Christmas Day as celebrated in the Maya village of Dzitnup. The devil sweeps through the village, stealing something from every household. The dancer is followed and the loot is eventually recovered and given to the church. Small boys play the masked roles, which helps assure that the villagers control the amount the devil takes. Tribute is usually paid in corn. From the book "The Modern Maya: Incidents of Travel and Friendship in the Yucatan," by Macduff Everton, University of Texas Press, 2012.
