A fine Wongo cephalomorphic wooden cup
This type of Wongo effigy head cup was used for ritually drinking palm wine. The crisply carved facial features are characteristic of the neighboring Western Pende, but the overall vessel form is typical of yet another neighboring people, the Lele. Early 20th C, from D.R.Congo. Approximately 4.75"H, and in fine condition with small, old losses along the right and left edges of the pedestal foot base. Deep, rich, shiny, dark, aged patina. Provenance: Peter Pollack, NYC and FL, collected before 1964. A little gem.
