Masterfully carved and fitted with a lost-wax casted, brass finial in the form of intertwining serpents and amphibians, this royal horn was used by high-ranking males to drink palm wine during ritual and special occasions, alike. Made from a section of bovine horn, the carving shows the ubiquitous spider-like motifs of the Cameroon Grassfields, along with petaloid shapes, various geometric forms, and amphibious creatures, all highlighted with an organic, white pigment. It is in very fine, perfectly preserved condition. The drinking horn measures 17" in length. Early 20th C. Provenance: Private collections in NY and FL since the early 1980's. Custom acrylic mount. A truly wonderful example.
