Several different peoples in Eastern Africa partake in the communal bread meal. The Gurage people make large wooden pedestal footed trays for the tradition. This fine, old example shows much use and a beautifully carved underside, which like South African meat trays, is what is exposed to the viewer when the tray is hung up, out of use. The tray measures 22.75"D x 5.50"H. It is in fine condition overall, with a single, hairline crack running across one side. The plain, glowing interior is complimented by the intricately carved, darker exterior. Earl 20th century. Provenance: Bernd Ratz, Maulbronn, Germany, since the 1970's.
