A Luba Songye wooden fetish figure
This small but well-conceived torso sculpture is from a Lubaized people, either Songye or a lesser known group of the northeastern Upper River Region. Its simple features and quietly brooding presence are typical of protective figures found in this transitional zone of the D.R.Congo. Very fine, shiny, medium brown, aged patina with remains of the fiber attachment. Some kaolin type material inside the 'feeding' hole atop the head. Measures 7"H, in fine condition with some loss and fraying of the remaining fiber attachment. Early-mid 20th century. Provenance: Old private collection, Florida, since the 1970's.
