The moon in its fullest phase appears to have been the inspiration for these round mask panels used during Ekpo secret society ceremonies. This very fine and large example has a whitened, deeply-layered, thick patina. It is made from a medium heavy wood and measures 15" in height, 12.50" at its widest point and 4"in depth. From coastal Nigeria, early 20th century. Provenance: old private collection, FL; this mask was authenticated and appraised by James M. Silberman, Alexandria VA, 1986.
