Having lost most of its once clearly defined features, this now fragmented Dogon carving is still recognizable as being that of a standing ancestor. The head has retained its original crested shape though stylized facial features are barely discernible. The surface shows an encrusted, fatty patina with areas of dryness, sacrificial matter, and numerous root-like growths attached. This is a centuries old Malian carving made from a hard and heavy wood, and measuring 14"H (not including the mount). Provenance: Eugene Behlen collection; Bart family collection, NY and FL, since the mid 20th century.
