Of large size with exaggerated features, these crested male kifwebe versions come from the southeastern area of Songye territory, close to the neighboring Luba peoples. The striated surface is polychromed with black, white and red organic pigments. Measuring 20"H x 12.50"D x 10.50"W, this mask is in very good condition, overall. There have been losses to the edges and a softening of the surface with equal fading of the coloration. An old split in the wood exists at the middle of the crest and the protruding mouth has been broken and mended in the past using metal nails. Still a very graphic and dynamic example. Provenance: Bart family collection, NYC and FL, since the 1950's.
