The forms of these somewhat rare, wrought iron trays are typically zoomorphic. They are often interpreted as a saurian composite creature. Such vessels held the sooty black paste, known locally as 'sihung', created for ritual tooth-filing and blackening among the Lampung people of the southernmost area of the Island of Sumatra. Length is 12", showing much age and use, and in fine condition with a heavily oxidized, encrusted patina. Most likely 19th/20th century, or earlier.
