This masterful example is carved from a light colored wood with a reddened, darkened, slightly encrusted, shiny patina. The filed, jagged teeth have been daubed with an organic, white pigment. It is a type believed to represent an ancestor and possibly used for the regulation of social life among males (Mugonge), though little is documented on mask types from the Chokwe-related, Ovimbundu people of Angola. Early 20th century, the mask measures 8.50"H x 6"W. It is in excellent condition, though one sliver section on the right, underside shows a crack line, and gluing. A rarely seen type. Provenance: Private Dutch collection, early 1980's.
