The classic Idimu example showing appropriate use and handling, and with the original fiber beard. Such simple but emotive masks functioned in the Bwami Society initiation ceremonies and were part of a graduated series of objects that identified the owner's rank in Bwami. From the Lega peoples, Maniema region, D.R.Congo. Measuring 7.75"L x 4.50"W (wood mask only), overall about 12" with plant fiber beard. Medium dense wood with oily, varied, darkened, shiny patina; faint traces of white kaolin pigment in places. Early 20th C. Excellent condition, overall, but fiber beard has typical losses and old kinks from storage. Provenance: Old private collection, Ohio
