A Fine Maya Blackware Cylinder Vase
The thin-walled, well-formed vessel showing a repeated, carefully incised motif of a human skull with a flint blade placed in its mouth, their position alternating one up, one down, all against a diagonal, linear, incised background. The flared rim with small nubbin appliques, further enhancing the vessel's austere, decorative appearance. Traces of red hematite pigment overall. From the Guatemalan Highlands, probably the Alta Verapaz region, late classic 600-900 AD. 8"H, in fine condition with good deposits and less than 15% new fill material.
