A rare Mixtec repousse gold ornament
The thin section of sheet gold, formed as an abstract figure of a human in characteristic Mixtec style with shapely, curvilinear form and intricate repousse features. Hands with fingers delineated and a loincloth flap hanging between the short legs. Probably once used as an attachment decoration on a headdress or sewn onto a garment. This fragile example of Mixtec goldwork has had the earth deposit carefully removed from its surface since the photograph was taken. It is in excellent condition and has some minor creases across its surface. Ex-Allan Long collection, NYC. 1.6 grams, 2.75" H. Mexico, Postclassic period, AD 1000-1400.
